Rockaway buys book wholesaler Pemic Books

The Rockaway Group of entrepreneur Jakub Havrlant is buying Czech book distributor and retailer Pemic Books. CzechCrunch estimates that the transaction could be in the range of hundreds of millions of crowns.

In 2015, Rockaway acquired Euromedia Group, a major publisher and distributor in the Czech Republic, which also operates the Luxor bookstore chain. Like Euromedia, Pemic Books specializes in wholesale, retail and online book sales through its Bookcentre bookstore network and operates the Bookcentre bookstore network. It also owns half of Audiotéka, the largest audiobook platform in the Czech Republic.

Rockaway Group, founded and led by Jakub Havrlant, focuses on e-commerce, e-travel, venture capital, fintech, media and blockchain. Its portfolio includes Euromedia, Invia Group, Vivantis, Balkan e-commerce platform Gjirafa, various technology startups and RockawayX, which includes one of Europe's largest blockchain funds.

The sale of Pemic Books follows the unexpected death of its founder and majority shareholder Petr Michalek in 2019.
