OpenAI raises $6.6 billion in funding

OpenAI announced that it raised $6.6 billion in its latest round of funding, bringing its current market value to $157 billion. This investment round was led by existing investor Thrive Capital and included participation from Microsoft, Nvidia, SoftBank, Khosla Ventures, Altimeter Capital, Fidelity and MGX.

The rapid growth of AI is underscored by OpenAI's valuation (which, by comparison, was $70 billion earlier this year). The company remains a leading player in AI, thanks largely to the widespread success of its ChatGPT chatbot, which boasts 250 million weekly active users and 11 million paying subscribers. However, OpenAI is not yet profitable, making this round of funding crucial. According to the WSJ, the company is expected to lose about $5 billion this year, despite generating $3.7 billion in revenue.

OpenAI projects that revenues will grow to $11.6 billion by 2025, with an optimistic target of $100 billion by 2029, which would be equivalent to Nestlé's current annual revenues. However, OpenAI faces increasing competition in the AI market from companies such as Anthropic, Safe Superintelligence and xAI.

Investors in this latest round have the right to withdraw their investment if OpenAI does not complete its planned transition from a not-for-profit to a for-profit model within two years.
