Italian fashion brand Prada is reportedly considering acquisition fashion house Versace from US-based Capri Holdings.
According to Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore, Capri Holdings intends to sell two of its luxury brands, Versace and Jimmy Choo, and has given Barclay's mandate to find potential buyers. Varsace bought Capri Holdings in 2018 for $1.8 billion and generated turnover of $1.1 billion in 2023. Softening of global demand for luxury goods in 2024 meant that Versace's sales fell by a third, and it pushed Versace to an operating loss. Another reason for the sale may have been the decision by a US anti-trust court in October to stop Capri's merger with the Tapestry Group in a deal worth more than $8.5 billion. The decision led to a 50 % drop in Capri Holdings' share price.
The acquisition of Versace would add a seventh fashion brand to Prada's portfolio and increase its turnover from 4.7 billion euros to around 6 billion euros. However, other fashion houses and investment funds are expected to be making an offer.
