OpenAI has introduced GPT-4o, its latest AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT, which features accelerated audio, image and video processing compared to its predecessors. GPT-4o will be available to all users, including those using the free version of OpenAI.

GPT-4 offered similar capabilities and provided users with multiple ways to interact with the AI. However, these were split into separate models, leading to longer response times and likely higher computational costs. GPT-4o has now merged these capabilities into a single model capable of processing text, audio and visual data, leading to greater efficiency.

With Microsoft's backing and a valuation of over $80 billion in February, OpenAI faces the challenge of maintaining its leadership in the generative AI market while devising sustainable revenue streams amid significant investment in processor technology and infrastructure for model development and training.

According to PitchBook, a record $29.1 billion was invested in the generative AI sector in 2023 through nearly 700 deals, a remarkable 260% increase from the previous year. Analysts predict that this sector will reach $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.
