Grocery retailers continue to develop their online presence amid consumer demand for greater value, personalization, and convenience. Sales will be made primarily using smartphones (m-commerce), in response to rising mobile and broadband penetration, and the growth of digital payment options, social media channels, and click-and-collect services.
Consumer expenditure on clothing and footwear suffered in 2020-21 amid the pandemic and owing to working from home. Over the forecast period, spending will grow at an annual average of 3% (in nominal euro terms), with online sales accounting for an increasing share of the market. The main crops produced in Slovakia are wheat, maize, barley, sugar beet, and potatoes. Livestock production is also important. Slovakia is a direct neighbor of Ukraine and can receive Ukrainian food deliveries by land transport even though exports via Ukrainian ports remain uncertain. Although recovery from the pandemic is underway, high food prices risk slowing growth in discretionary spending in 2022. The population's relatively low purchasing power has meant that multinational companies have often chosen not to market their highest-priced brands in Slovakia, preferring to promote brands at the lower end of the price chain.
